Fall update: Art Basel, auctions, and a shift in sentiment

Autumn is one of my favorite seasons for art, with major fairs invigorating collectors and offering a bellwether for the year ahead.

Art Basel Miami Beach is quickly approaching, opening to VIPs on December 3, and the fall season already feels more dynamic than it has in years. I was in London and Paris last month for Frieze and Art Basel, and both fairs had a distinctly positive energy. The presentations looked strong, galleries reported healthy sales across price points, and collectors seemed more decisive than they have in recent months. Perhaps it was the quality of material, or simply the sense that the market has recalibrated, but the shift felt real: dealers came prepared, and the best works moved quickly.

Upcoming are the November auctions in New York, which will be an important barometer for the season. Significant estates are coming to market—including the Leonard Lauder, Pritzker, and Edlis | Neeson collections—and the full week of sales across the major auction houses should offer a clearer picture of confidence heading into Miami Art Week. As always, I’ll be following the sales closely for compelling opportunities.

Miami Art Week is filled with clients, fairs, events—and, inevitably, traffic. This year should be no different. The best advice I can give is to plan ahead: know what you want to see and how you’re going to get there, and be ready to move quickly if you see something you can’t live without.

If you’re planning to be active and would like advisory support during the auctions or the fairs, I’m always ready to help.
